About the Maine Coon Cat

The Maine Coon is the largest domestic cat breed in the world and one of the oldest natural breeds in North America. Originating from the state of Maine in the northeastern United States, these majestic cats are often called "gentle giants" for their combination of impressive size and remarkably gentle, affectionate temperament.

Maine Coons are characterised by their large muscular bodies, broad chests, long bushy tails, and distinctive tufted ears with lynx tips. Their semi-long, water-resistant coat features a prominent ruff around the neck and tufted paws that act as natural "snowshoes." Males typically weigh 6–11 kg, with some exceptional individuals exceeding 17 kg, and can reach lengths of over 100 cm.

Often described as "dogs of the cat world," Maine Coons are extraordinarily sociable, intelligent, and trainable. They follow their owners from room to room, greet guests at the door, play fetch, and communicate through distinctive chirps, trills, and soft vocalisations rather than typical meowing.

Maine Coons are recognised by all major cat registries including TICA, CFA, GCCF, and FIFe. They are the official state cat of Maine and consistently rank among the most popular pedigree breeds worldwide.

History & Origin of the Maine Coon

The Maine Coon is one of the oldest natural cat breeds in North America, originating in the state of Maine in the 18th century. While their exact origins are surrounded by folklore — including tales of Marie Antoinette's cats and raccoon hybrids — the most accepted theory is that they descended from long-haired cats brought by European seafarers and settlers.

These cats interbred with local short-haired cats, and through natural selection in Maine's harsh winters, they developed their distinctive characteristics: large muscular bodies, thick water-resistant coats, tufted paws (acting as snowshoes), and bushy tails they could wrap around themselves for warmth.

Maine Coons were popular competitors at early American cat shows in the late 1800s. A brown tabby named "Cosey" won the first major American cat show at Madison Square Garden in 1895. However, the arrival of exotic Persian and Siamese breeds led to declining popularity, and by the 1950s the breed was nearly declared extinct.

Dedicated breeders formed the Maine Coon Breeders and Fanciers Association (MCBFA) in 1968 and worked to restore the breed. CFA granted championship status in 1976, and today the Maine Coon is consistently one of the most popular pedigree breeds worldwide. In 1985, it was designated the official state cat of Maine.

Maine Coon Colours & Patterns

Maine Coons are available in over 75 colour and pattern combinations. Here are the most popular variants:

Black Smoke

Dramatic black coat with pure white undercoat visible when fur parts. Shimmers with movement. One of the most striking Maine Coon colours.

Silver Tabby

Bright silver base with bold black tabby markings. Classic, mackerel, or spotted patterns. Vivid green eyes.

Brown Tabby

The 'classic' Maine Coon colour — warm brown base with black tabby markings. Classic or mackerel pattern. The most commonly seen colour.

Red/Orange

Warm ginger-red coat with tabby markings. Often called 'orange Maine Coon'. Bold, striking, and very popular.

White

Pure white coat with no markings. May have blue, gold, green, or odd eyes. Stunning and elegant.

Cream

Dilute of red — pale warm cream with subtle tabby ghost markings. Soft and elegant appearance.

Blue

Dilute of black — soft blue-grey coat. Can be solid or with tabby pattern. Gentle, muted tones.

Calico/Tortie

Multi-colour patches of black, red, and white (calico) or black and red (tortie). Almost exclusively female.

Black Silver

Deep black tipping over silver base. Dramatic contrast with the silver undercoat glowing through.

Red Silver Shaded

Rare and stunning — silver base with red/apricot tipping. Delicate, fairy-tale appearance.

Black Solid

Pure jet-black coat throughout. Intense copper or gold eyes. Sleek and dramatic, especially with the Maine Coon's large size.

Polydactyl

Not a colour but a distinctive trait — extra toes giving snowshoe-like paws. Historically common and considered lucky. TICA allows polydactyl Maine Coons.

Maine Coon Health Issues

Maine Coons are generally robust and long-lived, but their large size predisposes them to certain genetic conditions:

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM)

The most common heart disease in Maine Coons. A genetic mutation (MyBPC3) is specific to the breed. Responsible breeders DNA-test and echocardiogram screen breeding cats. Annual cardiac screening recommended for all Maine Coons.

Hip Dysplasia

Abnormal development of the hip joint, more common in large breeds. Maine Coons have a higher incidence than most cats. X-ray screening of breeding cats helps reduce prevalence. Weight management is crucial for affected cats.

Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA)

A genetic condition causing progressive muscle weakness in the hind limbs. DNA testing is available and eliminates carriers from breeding programs. Affected cats have a normal lifespan but reduced mobility.

Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD)

Inherited condition causing cyst formation in kidneys. Less common in Maine Coons than Persians, but responsible breeders still DNA-test. Early detection via ultrasound allows management.

Dental & Periodontal Disease

Maine Coons can be prone to gingivitis and resorptive lesions. Regular dental care — brushing, dental treats, and annual veterinary dental exams — helps prevent serious issues.

Feeding & Nutrition Guide

Maine Coons' large frames and active metabolisms require a carefully managed, high-quality diet.

Grooming & General Care

Maine Coons' semi-long coats require regular maintenance. Their shaggy, water-resistant fur can mat without routine brushing.

Living With a Maine Coon in Singapore

Despite their large size, Maine Coons adapt remarkably well to Singapore's indoor living.

HDB & Apartment Living

Maine Coons thrive in HDB flats and condominiums despite being the largest domestic breed. Their calm, laid-back temperament means they don't need large spaces — they need vertical space. Invest in ceiling-height cat trees, wall-mounted shelves, and window perches. Under the HDB cat framework, you can keep up to 2 licensed cats. Maine Coons are surprisingly quiet and don't disturb neighbours.

Climate Considerations

Maine Coons evolved for cold climates, so Singapore's tropical heat requires air-conditioned environments. Keep your home at 22–26°C. Their thick coat can trap heat, so ensure good ventilation and always have fresh water available. Regular grooming is essential in humid conditions to prevent matting and skin issues. Consider a shorter "lion cut" during the hottest months for comfort.
