The History of the Munchkin Breed

While short-legged cats were first documented in England during the 1930s, it wasn't until 1983 in Louisiana, USA, that the breed was formally developed. The name "Munchkin" was inspired by the tiny characters in The Wizard of Oz.

Their genetic short-legged trait—known as achondroplasia or pseudoachondroplasia—is a naturally occurring mutation, not a result of crossbreeding or unethical practices. Today, the Munchkin cat is beloved worldwide for its unique look and delightful nature.

Grooming & Health Care for Munchkins

Though Munchkins require only moderate grooming, certain care practices are crucial to support their health and mobility, especially as they age.

Brush short-haired Munchkins weekly; long-haired ones require more frequent grooming

🇸🇬 Owning a Munchkin Cat in Singapore

Munchkin cats are well-suited for Singapore's indoor living environment. Their playful, social, affectionate, curious nature makes them excellent companions for HDB flats, condominiums, and apartments.

Singapore Cat Licensing (2024–2026)

Under the new HDB cat policy (effective 1 September 2024), all cats in HDB flats must be licensed by August 31, 2026. The annual fee is $14 per cat, and you can keep up to 2 cats per HDB flat. All Designer Cats kittens come pre-microchipped, making the licensing process seamless.

Climate Considerations

Munchkins are perfectly suited for Singapore's climate and apartment living. Their compact size and moderate energy level make them ideal for HDB flats. They adapt well to air-conditioned environments and enjoy interactive play indoors.
