Singapore's Trusted Oriental Shorthair Cattery

The Oriental Shorthair is one of the most elegant and distinctive cat breeds in the world. With their long, svelte bodies, strikingly large ears, and wedge-shaped heads, they are often described as the supermodels of the cat world. Developed from Siamese heritage in the 1950s, Oriental Shorthairs bring intelligence, vocal charm, and unwavering devotion to their families.

At Designer Cats, we partner with ethical UK catteries to bring you premium Oriental Shorthair kittens — fully health-screened, vaccinated, microchipped, and supported with lifetime breeder guidance for Singapore families.

Oriental Shorthair Colours & Markings

The Oriental Shorthair is one of the most colourful pedigree breeds in the world, recognised in more than 300 colour and pattern combinations. Every colour appears on the same svelte, big-eared, almond-eyed body — only the coat changes.

Solid Colours

Even, glossy, one-colour coats with no markings: ebony (jet black), pure white (with blue eyes, odd eyes or green eyes), blue (soft grey), chestnut (warm brown, known as Havana in some registries), lilac (pink-toned dove grey), cinnamon, fawn, red and cream.

Tabby Patterns

Four distinct tabby patterns appear in nearly every colour: classic (bold swirls or blotches), mackerel (narrow tiger stripes), spotted (broken stripes into spots), and ticked (each hair banded in colour, giving an almost solid shimmer). Silver tabbies — a pale silver undercoat with contrasting black or blue markings — are especially striking and popular.

Shaded, Smoke & Tipped

These coats mix a silvery-white undercoat with colour at the tips: smoke cats look solid until the fur parts to reveal a pale base, shaded cats have colour on the top third of each hair, and shell or tipped coats carry colour on just the outer eighth — producing the famous "cameo" and "silver shaded" looks.

Bi-colour & Parti-colour

Bi-colours combine white with any solid or tabby colour in varying proportions — from a cat with just white paws and chest (mitted look) to the harlequin (mostly white with colour patches) and van pattern (colour confined to the head and tail). Tortoiseshells blend patches of red or cream over black, blue, cinnamon or fawn; when a tortoiseshell also carries tabby striping it is called a torbie, and one with generous white becomes a calico-style parti-colour.

Why pointed kittens are registered as Siamese

Oriental Shorthair and Siamese cats are sister breeds: same body type, same large ears, same wedge-shaped head and same ancestry. The only thing that separates them in the show world is the pointed (colour-restricted) pattern — the pale body with darker face, ears, legs and tail that Siamese cats are famous for.

Because of this, cat registration authorities such as the CFA, TICA and FIFe apply a simple rule: a pointed kitten is registered as a Siamese; a fully coloured kitten is registered as an Oriental Shorthair. So when a kitten from our Oriental Shorthair lines is born with seal point, blue point, chocolate point or lilac point colouring — or the lynx point (tabby-pointed) and tortie point variations — it is categorised as a Siamese for registration and competition, even though both of its parents are registered Oriental Shorthairs.

The pointed pattern is recessive and has always existed within these combined bloodlines, so this is a normal and expected occurrence, not a mixed breeding. The kitten is still fully pedigree-registered and purebred — simply under the breed its coat pattern belongs to. That is why every Oriental Shorthair kitten we offer is a fully coloured, non-pointed kitten, while any pointed babies in a litter are registered and homed as Siamese.

Seal point from solid-colour parents: the genetics explained

It can look surprising — two solid, fully coloured Oriental Shorthair parents producing a seal point kitten — but genetically it is perfectly straightforward. The colourpoint pattern is caused by a single recessive gene (called the cs gene). Every Siamese carries two copies of it, which is why the whole body "fails" to develop colour except at the coolest points.

A solid-coloured Oriental Shorthair can carry one copy of this gene without showing any pointing at all — the solid colour simply hides it. So a "solid" parent can quietly pass the cs gene on. When both parents are carriers, a kitten can inherit a copy from each side, and one in four kittens on average will be born pointed — seal point, blue point, chocolate point or lilac point.

So, are those kittens Oriental Shorthairs genetically? Yes — completely. A pointed kitten from Oriental Shorthair parents shares exactly the same DNA, body type, bloodline and pedigree as its solid siblings. The only difference is that it inherited two copies of the recessive cs gene instead of one or none. Genetically, it is an Oriental Shorthair expressing the colourpoint pattern; for registration and competition, however, cat associations classify by what the coat looks like, so the kitten is registered as a purebred Siamese. Nothing about its breeding, health or pedigree changes — only the register it is written into.
